I have always been a natural worrier.
I've worried pretty much from the beginning about everything. Worrying is in my personality type. It’s in my family order as a first born. And it is even in my astrological chart! I have an active mind, and it has always been natural and easy for me to worry. It has been easy for me to worry about everything all the time. In fact, I was that woman who always had a big giant purse of all the things that I needed. And in that purse, one thing that I often carried was an umbrella. I felt the need to always be prepared for the worse. At all times. Even at like 18. Fast forward many years, and as a certified mindset hypnotist, I have made some changes about myself. My purse, though existent and not wallet-size, is much smaller than it used to be. And you will not find an umbrella in there anymore. I've decided to let the umbrella go. In this current 21st century life of ours, it’s no wonder that so many of us worry about the what ifs. The information age and social media are constantly throwing worst-case, negative, terrifying imagery into our faces 24/7. Today, it's more natural to be a worrier more than ever before. But what is worrying, exactly? And how can we change it? The best answer I can give is that worrying is where your imagination went. The vast majority of us had vivid active imaginations as children. As we grow older, society conditions and forces us to give up the imaginative desires, dreams and goals fueled by our imagination and to embrace the real and dull world of adulting. When we get to a certain age, society demands that we put away our toys, grow up and get real. But what happens to our imagination? Many of us believe that we just lose it and that we are no longer imaginative or creative people. Nothing could be further from the truth. We never give up our imagination. Our imagination never leaves us. It is simply given another job. For most adults, the imagination now takes on the roll of Worry Engine. Where once it created vivid conversations with imaginary friends, expansive magical kingdoms and elaborate fairytale costumes, it now puts just as much gusto into creating hell visions of catastrophe, doom, humiliation, rejection, destruction and death. Especially towards anything new that we want to do. Your imagination is alive and well, but it's likely working against you instead of in your favor. So, what to do about this? Instead of worrying about the worst case scenario, how about reverse worrying instead and asking yourself, “What's the best thing that can happen to me today?” Most people recognize with their rational mind that scientifically what is most likely to happen in today's world is that you will be safe and something even better could happen. So why not employ your powerful imagination to inundate you with visions of success, glory and the best possible outcomes? Practice reverse worrying or a change. Furthermore, excessive worrying may hint at an out-of-balance relationship with control. Our ordered and civilized lives often give us the illusion that everything can be under our control. But this is truly not the nature of life. Even in our civilized 21st century lives, life still will harbor plenty of uncertainty and unpredictability. Ask yourself, “What can I control today? And what can I not control? And what is a waste of my energy to try to control?” Practicing these two things can have powerful and positive effects on your life over time. When you stop obsessively carrying around a bulky umbrella “just in case,” it makes room for things you actually want…or just lightness, which in itself is priceless. What do you tend to think of when you think of hypnosis? Many people think of a stage hypnosis show, where a hypnotist has hypnotized someone into believing they’re a dog or a duck. The audience then gets a great laugh to watch this person bark or quack, or even go all rigid believing that they are a steel bar. Now, this is certainly a fun method of hypnosis. But hypnosis has so many more and incredible applications that can benefit us in so many ways. I want to talk about one today: mindset. What is mindset? I like to think of it as a combination of your attention, your focus, your thoughts, and your emotions all, which come together to create a measurable visible result in your life. Mindset is so important. When it comes to achieving our goals and unlocking our potential, the reason for this is because it plays a crucial originating role in the end results that we see in our life. Our mindset creates our habits and behaviors, and these habits and behaviors are really how we spend most of our life and time on this earth. In turn, these habits and behaviors then create our life and our results. Any time we are going through a change or a transition or wanting to achieve something that is different, it is vital that we begin to shift our mindset towards what we want. So how to know if you may need to pay attention to your mindset? If you experience yourself feeling stuck in place, trying to make a change but circling back to the same unwanted spot again and again and again, this may be a sign that your mindset needs attention. It's so hard to have your attention, your focus, your thoughts, and your emotions run the same way and in the same patterns and expect different results. Hypnosis is a powerful way to do just that. Hypnosis helps to get beneath the surface exploring the unconscious habits of thought and feeling that are running us. Most people tend to fail to make change or to make it stick because they change the habit of action only. But an important role of the mind is that every habit of action is run by a habit of thought. It's important to change the habit of thought to make the most and lasting impact on the habit of action. And mindset work, especially with the assistance of hypnosis, can do just that. Regardless of whether or not you choose to use hypnosis, I'd like for you to ask yourself… Is there an area in your life where you are feeling stuck? And if so, what thoughts, what feelings may be keeping you stuck in place? And where are you putting the majority of your attention and focus? On what is keeping you stuck? Or on the solution that will get you free? There are multiple reasons and explanations for why this is, but one of the contributing factors surely is the state of the world as well as our daily interactive experience with it. As a certified hypnotist, I help people to feel better and to reach and achieve goals that will. bring about life fulfillment through reaching their personal and professional potential. Anxiety and fear about navigating a toxic world that often feels unsafe remains something that a lot of people want help with. Though we may fight to change and improve the world, it's obvious that no one individual can ever bring about the change that's needed. The change has to come from the collective. And collective change takes time. I wanted to bring up five important things to remember whenever it fills as though the world is toxic, unsafe and about to come apart at any moment. 1. This is nothing new. Humans have not changed and we tend to deal with the same issues over and over. These same issues tend to change on the surface level, but at their core we have dealt with this before, and often in worse circumstances. 2. It feels more terrifying because of the speed of information and the monetized hyper focus on fear-causing news. Thanks to the magic of the internet and the constant presence of social media, we now have an almost god-like omnipresence where we can hear about the tiniest thing that happens in the most remote places in the world. When you combine this with the fact that the media and algorithms are designed to grab onto anything that induces fear, paranoia, anxiety, horror, and dread, you have a concoction for a constant maddening stream of violence, negativity and terror. No wonder our mental health is degrading. 3. It is still a great time, the best in my opinion, to be in this world. I personally can name a million worst times to be on earth. I am a Black woman of color living in what is arguably the most racist nation in the modern world. Almost every bit of my nation’s history was a single-minded attempt to destroy people’s bodies, souls, dignity and happiness. But I will say that I would still rather be here, in the 21st century, then in any other time and place. And in fact, though I’ve often cried with anguish, fear and pain over the senseless violence and our government’s refusal to protect us, I also have broken down with wonder and gratitude that I have been born when and where I was. To me, both are true. Now, obviously there's a lot that needs to be done. And we should still do that work and never stop. But it’s so important to also occupy a space of gratitude for the immense gifts that we have that came out of the work of those who have come before us. 4. Challenge is part of our earthly experience. Even if you aren't a straight up woohoo, spiritual person, like I am, I believe that we are all here to overcome challenge. There is actually a philosophical movement called Stoicism that is really built around fully accepting challenge as an integral part of our experience and our growth. The fact is, the way the world is has always been the state of the world. Uncertainty. Calamity. Conflict. Wildness. Unpredictability. Violence. Cruelty. These are parts of the earthly experience. They have always been parts of the earthly experience and they will always be parts of the earthly experience. I personally believe We can reduce it, but I believe it will always exist. In order to reduce it, we need to do so as a collective, and that is what we are working on as a society. But no one person can make these changes by themselves at once. All social change must come from the collective, and collective change takes time. But in the meantime, it's important to remember that everything that you want that exists now, alongside everything that appears broken and frightening. Beauty. Joy. Happiness. Contentment. Desire. Love. Abundance. Enlightenment. All of these exist too and are also very very much a part of the earthly experience. Both the light and the dark, the wanted and the unwanted and everything in between exists right now. When you can't change and eradicate one, it's important to embrace and focus on the other. 5. The best revenge you can ever have is to thrive, to have joy and to celebrate life, yourself and each other. After all, the ultimate goal of any terror campaign is to steal your joy, your happiness and your peace Don't let anyone or anything steal your joy in your life, your beautiful body and your power and potential.
