Life in the 21st century certainly has its unique challenges.
On one hand, we live with and benefit from an incredible and unimagined amount of innovation, opportunities and more knowledge about our world than our ancestors could ever have imagined.
We know more than ever before about how our bodies work and therefore how to heal and fix ailments. We know more than ever before about how weather happens so that we can predict it. We know more than ever before about how our universe works and we use a lot of this information to provide more security and stability to our lives than ever before.
But on the other hand, our time has also presented us with many unforeseen and unique challenges and obstacles.
As a certified mindset hypnotist, I help people to overcome and manage anxiety, low confidence and destructive negative thinking to feel better, more confident and in control of their lives. From my perspective, I see that many people struggle today to feel good, to feel at peace, and to feel confident and optimistic about themselves and their opportunities and their place in this world.
Most professional sources that measure mental health report that depression, anxiety and other mental health issues are at an all-time high.
But why is this?
I am not a licensed psychiatrist or counselor, but I like to share my opinions as someone who has successfully helped others with feeling better (and who is simply also another fellow 21st-century traveler on this Earth journey!).
Certainly chemical imbalances and other physical, neurological and genetic occurrences can account for some of what is happening in our bodies.
But I think it's safe to say that there is likely something else going on at a societal level that could be contributing to such high reported numbers of unease, dissatisfaction and unhappiness. I personally believe that most people can feel better naturally.
So why don't we?
I read an excellent book recently called "Lost Connections" by Johann Hari. The author describes his years-long battle with depression, and discusses how disconnection from important things that we need can increasingly lie at the root of depression. (More about this very interesting book in next week's blog.)
Though we live in a time that offers us more freedom than ever before, many of us are pushed by society into one of only a few roles. For many decades now, we have been taught to chase money and achievements, and are taught fiercely that the only way to be happy is to do what society tells you to do to be happy, i.e. the money, the job, the cars, the big house, the marriage, the 2.5 kids, the dog and cat, the repeating job that ties you to the same location day after day, after week after week, year after year and decade after decade. Our society has been giving us the huge message that if you have these things, you matter. If you don't, you don't matter.
The 21st century unique rise of social media has amped this message up to 11, as well as giving a powerful amplifier for some of our worst and darkest (but by no means new) human impulses such as cruelty and violence.
We're going to pick apart the 21st century lifestyle more in the next blog, but for now, I want you to ask an underlying question: How do you feel about your world now?
I've heard more than once that we live in a dystopian time right now. I personally don't believe that, and you shouldn't either, and I'll tell you why.
As a certified hypnotist, I believe that most of our most immediate problems are a result of our perceptions of the world, others and ourselves. We often create narratives that fence us in and keep us from what we want.
I don't believe this world is bad. I actually believe it's neutral. Yes, there's a lot of suffering and darkness and a lot needs to be done better. But your world has ALWAYS been that way.
The world, by definition, is uncertain and an intense experience. That’s its natural state and has always been its natural state. We're also living at a time of social and technological transition and upheaval, and big change creates stress in all animals, including humans.
Most people who make the case for the present time being a bad time like to point at all the suffering, all the ways things can go bad because of our tech and our people. They often like to point at past "better" times.
But better…for who? I promise you that if there was a time that worked well for you, there were many, many people who were suffering and dying, and for whom it was not a very good time at all.
At both that "ideal" past time and now, both happiness and suffering, peace and violence, life and death, joy and despair, coexisted. None of these were any less real. But for many people, only one gets most of the attention. What feels more real depends on the observer.
It's useless to hate the world you're in. And more importantly, it is hard to find happiness and peace and calm in a world that you hate. Because you can only find happiness and peace and calm in the world and time that you are in, which is now, and only now. You belong here, and nowhere else. You will only exist in this body here, and nowhere else.
Perception and attention is a vital superpower. Find the beauty and the joy and the fun and the sensuousness and the incredible adventures and opportunities in this world that are available to you every day (and UNIQUELY available to you and not your ancestors) and be GRATEFUL for it all. Because its freaking everywhere, if you look for them!
Make peace with your world and your time to help create more peace within yourself. Deep breaths. You didn't ask to be here, but you are, and we're really glad you are. You belong here, and you can thrive here.
But if you find this hard, know that its ok. It can be challenging to change our habits of thinking and perception. But hypnosis can help with that.
What is Hypnosis?
Before we delve into the benefits of hypnosis, it's essential to understand what it is. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. It allows individuals to access their subconscious mind, where many of our beliefs and behaviors are deeply rooted. As a hypnotist offering online sessions as well as sessions in King of Prussia/Philadelphia suburbs, I use this altered state to help clients make positive changes in their lives. The following are just some ways that hypnosis can help.
Stress and Anxiety Relief
One of the primary reasons people seek hypnotherapy in King of Prussia and Philadelphia is to combat stress and anxiety. The 21st century has brought about a myriad of new stressors, including the constant connectivity of technology and the demands of modern living. Hypnotherapy can help individuals achieve a deep state of relaxation, reducing the impact of stress on their physical and mental health. By reprogramming negative thought patterns and responses, hypnosis enables clients to manage anxiety effectively.
Overcoming Compulsive Behaviors
Hypnosis has shown remarkable success in helping individuals overcome unwanted habits. Whether you're struggling with smoking, overeating, or other unhealthy habits, hypnotherapy can help. In King of Prussia and Philadelphia or online, hypnotherapy can change the subconscious associations that drive unwanted habits, making it easier for you to break free from destructive patterns.
In the 21st century, obesity and weight-related health issues have become increasingly prevalent. Hypnotherapy can be a valuable tool in the battle against excess weight. By addressing emotional and psychological factors that contribute to overeating and poor dietary choices, hypnosis can empower you to make healthier decisions and maintain a sustainable weight.
Improved Mental Health
The pressures of the modern world often lead to mental health challenges such as depression and phobias. Hypnotherapy in King of Prussia and Philadelphia can complement traditional therapies by addressing the underlying issues contributing to these conditions. Through guided imagery and cognitive restructuring, hypnosis can help individuals regain control over their emotional well-being.
Self-doubt and low self-esteem can be major roadblocks to personal and professional success. Hypnotherapy is a powerful way to boost self-confidence and self-belief. By reframing negative self-perceptions and instilling positive self-talk, individuals can reach their full potential in the 21st century's competitive landscape.
Hypnosis can help you to reduce stress and improve focus and concentration. By incorporating relaxation and stress reduction techniques into their daily routines, people can excel in their professional lives while maintaining their well-being and balance with their personal lives.
